Yuko Moriyama Artist in Residence J+BAN 2003
Artist's dialogue : 1 November
Earlier in the year London based artist and architect Yuko Moriyama
exhibited her work in a solo show in Tokyo, part of Japanese & British
Art Now or J+BAN. Following an invitation by the SPICA art
Yuko returns to the capital as Artist in Residence at the gallery.
During her three-week residency Yuko will produce large scale, site-specific waterscapes which she
sourced from the River Thames in London. Her highly emotive drawings
on paper deal with the meditative, spiritual and symbolic nature of water.
Yuko has lived, studied and worked in the UK since 1978. She attended
the University College London and the Architectural Association
and for a decade worked on architectural projects in the UK and
Japan. Recently she has concentrated on developing a career as
an artist. Her 2000/1 London debut exhibition Water Spirits, a
series of exquisitely rendered works received widespread praise.
Yuko is a quintessential J&BAN artist, a Japanese who embodies
both cultures and draws from both. Her work has an essential
Japanese spiritualit which will remain wherever she resides.
